My path towards a career in nursing has been deeply rooted in a desire to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives and to contribute positively to society. This aspiration can be traced back to my childhood when I was inspired by a neighbor who worked as a dedicated nurse. I remember asking her why she devoted long hours and odd schedules to her profession when she could be with her own family. Her response left a lasting impression on me – she considered her patients and clients as her extended family and recognized that they often needed her care more urgently than her own family did. This moment ignited my passion for nursing and the idea of serving others.
I hold nursing in the highest regard, understanding that it comes with both immense challenges and incredible rewards. This profession demands sincerity, a commitment to serving others, the willingness to adapt to evolving demands, and the qualities of compassion and empathy. I strongly believe that to excel in nursing, one must be an exceptional listener, free from preconceived notions, and ready to comprehend the unique circumstances of every individual.
My academic journey is focused on earning a Master’s of Science in Nursing Administrative Management. I chose this specialization because my sense of compassion extends beyond just the patients or clients – it encompasses my colleagues and fellow nursing staff as well. Through my nursing experiences, I’ve observed the pressures that nurses face, driven by patient perceptions, interactions with colleagues, and various aspects of the role. My goal is to support fellow nurses in coping with these pressures by pursuing an administrative and leadership program.
To deliver holistic well-being and ensure that nurses can provide the best possible care to their patients, they must be in the right frame of mind. Therefore, I wish to take on a role that addresses these health and nursing challenges on different levels. I’ve encountered nurses who felt dissatisfied in their profession due to factors like low pay, extensive workloads, and challenges with diverse patient interactions, including potential bullying by senior nurses. Witnessing these concerns, I decided to focus on nursing administration to address these issues and instigate positive changes in contemporary healthcare institutions. By pursuing this major, I aim to manage the evolving healthcare landscape, evaluate contemporary issues, and empower nurses to provide the highest level of care.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I bring with me one year of experience working with underserved populations. My role as a Registered Nurse in a hospital in my hometown – an area with limited access to healthcare facilities – allowed me to educate and assist individuals in improving their health. Most of the residents in my hometown lacked basic healthcare knowledge, and it was my responsibility to provide essential information on immunization, diabetes control, hypertension management, and other preventive measures. This experience deeply resonated with me, and it solidified my commitment to making a positive impact on society by focusing on both physical and mental well-being.
Furthermore, I’ve been fortunate to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Filipinos, South Africans, Nigerians, and Indians. Initially, I conducted research to understand the nuances of different cultures, but I soon realized the importance of approaching this task with an open mind. Developing cultural competency became crucial as I recognized that preconceived notions about people from different backgrounds could lead to bias and ethnocentrism. By embracing a broader perspective and treating everyone as individuals rather than representatives of their culture, I’ve developed a profound sense of cultural sensitivity, which I believe is essential for every nurse.
In conclusion, my journey into the field of nursing is driven by compassion, a commitment to improving the lives of patients and colleagues, a dedication to addressing healthcare challenges, and a strong belief in cultural competency. I aspire to serve society by combining these qualities to offer the best possible care and make a positive difference in healthcare and beyond.
1. When I was a little girl one of our neighbours was working as a nurse. That lady used
to go regularly at work and whenever she was called for her duty even in odd hours. I
used to ask about her job and why she does not stay at home with her family. And she
said that her patients and clients are also her family and sometimes they need her
more than her own family does. Since then I wanted to go into nursing profession and
help the society.
I have a lot of respect for nursing as a profession and this role can be very challenging
at times. This is particularly due to the amount of sincerity and a feeling to serve the
people; it can also be hectic and give a toss to the personal life of an individual.
However, nursing also gives immense job satisfaction and it is very rewarding and
fulfilling profession. In my opinion, an individual should have compassion, empathy,
a feeling of serving people, willingness to learn and change with the demands of time,
to get into the nursing profession. In fact, it is also important to be a good listener and
understanding the situation of others without any pre- conceived notions. My goals
for completing the graduate program is to enhance these qualities and improve
myself to become a better human to serve the society and shape my life in a way that
caters to this profession, serve people, be a friend to them and be able to put a smile
on someone’s face.
2. The majors I have opted for is Master’s of Science in Nursing Administrative
Management. The first reason of opting for this profession was because I feel that I
have compassion and determination to improve the lives of other individuals. This
feeling is not only restricted to the patients or clients, but my colleagues and nursing
staff as well. Many times in my experience and practices of nursing I have noted that
the nurses face many issues in their job, these are due to the perceptions of their
patients, their colleagues, staff members and other elements of the role. I would like
to help nurses deal with pressure and cope with it by studying an administrative and
leadership program that will help me to address the various health and nursing issues
at different levels. As a matter of fact, in order to work with people, serve them and
provide with a holistic well being, the nurses should always be in the right frame of
mind so that they can provide the best services to treat their clients. If they are facing
any issues in their jobs and find it unsatisfactory, then in my opinion they would not
be able to do the justice to their important role. While working as RN in a hospital, I
saw many nurses who did not like their job because of several factors such as lesser
pay, lot of hard work, dealing with different patients and even get bullied by senior
nurses. That is when I decided that I want to go into nursing administrative role to
deal with all these issues and create a change in the way in which health care centres
work in the contemporary times. By taking up this major, I would be able to manage
the evolving health care practices and evaluate the contemporary issues and trends
that impact the health care systems. The role of nurse has become more challenging
and I want to use my knowledge to help them cope up with pressures, besides dealing
with the likes of my clients as well.
3. Yes, I have 1 year of experience in working with underserved populations. In my own
hometown, I got the opportunity to complete my internship and take up the role of RN
for 1 year in a hospital. The hospital is located in my village itself and it has limited
access to proper health care systems and advanced facilities for the patients. However,
the hospital gets a large number of patients every month who are not able to get the
best health care services. In fact, most of the people in my hometown village have low
levels of education and they are not able to take basic care of themselves. My
responsibility in this hospital was to make rounds and provide the people with basic
information and modifications in their lifestyle that could help them to improve their
health and avoid getting diseases. I taught them about the information of get
immunization, controlling diabetes and hypertension etc.
After working in this hospital a becoming a people’s person, I wanted to take my
experience forward and do something to change the society and bring about some
form of modifications in the healthcare system. There are hospital from the
government, but people are not aware of the basic information that would help them
remain well and healthy. After completing my studies and saving enough money, I
want to change the health care scenario in my hometown and provide the best of
health care services to the people of my village. I want to work for the betterment of
society and help people deal with not only their physical problems, but emotional and
mental well being as well.
4. I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to work with people from different sections
of the society. I am pleased to inform you that I have worked with people from
different cultures such as Filipinos, South Africans, Nigerians and Indians. And I
would like to mention that all these races and communities are very different from one
another and from my culture as well. Before proceeding with my work, I did some
research and tried to analyse the way people from different communities behave and
what can I expect or do best to help them. However, I realized that this step was not
necessary because it led me have some pre-conceived notions about people of
different places and made me a little bias when I read about their culture. But soon,
when I started to work with them, the first thing I realized that how wrong I had been
and I need to change my way of thinking to do full justice to my role. And this is
extremely sensitive and important experience that a nurse can go through. While
working in a health care profession, one should know that having prejudice for any
community of people would only be harmful for the client and nurse both. Thus, I
developed the skill of cultural competency and understood that a nurse should always
be neutral when working with patients because what may seem right to one individual
may be wrong for another and these practices will lead to ethnocentrism, which is
totally wrong. In fact, by having a broader perspective and treating everybody as
individuals and not a symbol of their culture, a nurse would not only improve her
profession, but her personality also. Thus, I developed the skills of working with
multicultural people and reach out intellectually to make a clear view of my
surroundings and behaving with neutral values to provide the best of services.
